Kampala, Uganda: The Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, has paid a moving and heartfelt tribute to the late Prof. George W. Kanyeihamba, hailing him as a “selfless leader, fearless defender of human rights, and a true patriot.”
Prof. Kanyeihamba, a renowned constitutional scholar and retired Supreme Court Justice, passed away earlier this week, drawing an outpouring of grief from across the nation. In a condolence message addressed to the family at their home in Buziga, Kabaka Mutebi described the late professor as “a friend of mine for many years,” and praised his resolute dedication to justice, democracy, and the rule of law.
“We join the nation in mourning the passing of a charismatic nationalist and champion of fundamental human rights,” the Kabaka said. “As a courageous leader, he consistently advocated for unity in diversity, the rule of law, and good governance—even when it meant standing alone.”
Prof. Kanyeihamba played a pivotal role in shaping Uganda’s constitutional framework, most notably as one of the architects of the 1995 Constitution. Even after retiring from the Supreme Court, he remained a staunch and outspoken voice on governance, justice, and democratic principles.
Kabaka Mutebi reflected on Kanyeihamba’s enduring impact, noting that his influence reached far beyond the courtroom.
“His unwavering commitment to peace, unity, and justice earned him a special place in the hearts of many,” he said. “Through mentorship and consistent advocacy, he helped shape an entire generation of legal and civic leaders.”
In addition to his legal brilliance, the Kabaka commended Kanyeihamba’s deep appreciation for Uganda’s cultural heritage and traditional institutions.
“He understood and championed the vital role of cultural institutions in national development,” the Kabaka added. “His love for Uganda was evident in every word he spoke and every action he took.”
Concluding his tribute, Kabaka Mutebi called on Uganda’s youth and emerging leaders to draw inspiration from Kanyeihamba’s life and legacy.
“May young leaders emulate his courage, his clarity of thought, and his unwavering commitment to speaking the truth,” he said.
Prof. George W. Kanyeihamba leaves behind a towering legacy as one of Uganda’s most principled legal minds, a courageous guardian of constitutionalism, and a tireless advocate for justice, dignity, and human rights. His voice may be silent, but his impact will continue to echo across generations.
