Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende Set to Return Home After Three Months of Specialized Treatment in Kenya

Kampala Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Shamim Malende is expected to return to Uganda on Monday, July 21, 2025, after spending three months undergoing specialized treatment at Nairobi Hospital in Kenya.

Malende, who has battled a series of serious health complications over the past two years, was flown out of the country on April 10 following a referral from Nsambya Hospital, where she had been hospitalized for a month. At the time, she was suffering from debilitating abdominal pain and related complications that left her severely weakened and unable to walk without assistance.

In a brief statement to the press before her departure in April, the MP disclosed that she had endured multiple emergency abdominal surgeries in recent months. Her prolonged health struggles had seen her in and out of hospital since 2023.

On Sunday evening, Malende broke her silence with a hopeful message to supporters posted on social media: “Coming back home, Monday 21/7/2025. Thank you, my people.”

Despite her extended absence from public life, the first-term legislator has remained politically active in spirit. The National Unity Platform (NUP) recently nominated her in absentia to contest for the party’s flag in the 2026 general elections, signaling continued confidence in her leadership and popularity among party faithful.

Malende’s return is expected to spark renewed energy among her supporters in Kampala, many of whom have closely followed her health journey and expressed solidarity during her recovery. Her re-entry into the political arena will likely stir momentum as the country heads into a crucial election cycle.
