In top-level football, players typically back themselves to break into the starting XI at any club they join. Confidence is part of the DNA of elite athletes—even when the odds seem slim.
But even the most self-assured player would acknowledge that Bukayo Saka’s spot in the Arsenal lineup is virtually untouchable. The England international is not just a key figure at Arsenal he’s among the best players in the world. The Gunners are noticeably less effective when he’s absent.
That naturally raises the question: what role does Madueke expect to play at the Emirates?
At Chelsea last season, Madueke played 84% of his Premier League minutes on the right wing, directly overlapping with Saka’s position at Arsenal. On paper, he would be an excellent backup a dynamic, direct option who can maintain attacking pressure when Saka needs rest or is unavailable.
But surely, that’s not the sole reason Arsenal pursued him.
Arteta and his coaching staff are known for their tactical flexibility, and Madueke’s versatility and flair suggest he could be more than just cover. Whether it’s rotating with Saka, operating on the opposite flank, or playing a more central role in certain systems, his signing hints at deeper strategic planning and perhaps a desire to add more explosiveness and depth to Arsenal’s wide options.
In short, Madueke may be arriving as a backup but he won’t settle for that label.
