Hundreds throng Calvary Hill for healing, spiritual renewal

RWAMPARA; Calvary Hill Prayer Centre, nestled in the serene hills of Mirama Village, Rugando Sub-county, Rwampara District, has rapidly grown into one of Uganda’s most vibrant Christian pilgrimage destinations.

Since its establishment in 2017, the site has become a spiritual haven for believers from Uganda and beyond, attracting hundreds seeking divine grace, healing, deliverance, and renewal.

Often described by pilgrims as a “paradise on earth,” Calvary Hill is a Catholic spiritual centre under the Mbarara Archdiocese. It serves as an extension of the Yesu Ahuriire Spiritual Renewal Centre in Karama and is fast earning a reputation as a unifying interfaith space where Christians of all denominations gather in prayer and worship.

According to Rev. Fr. Alexander Mwebembezi, the Spiritual Director of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Mbarara Archdiocese, the faithful gather at Calvary Hill every First Friday and Third Saturday of the month for collective prayer sessions that last from morning until late afternoon.

“To all Christians, pilgrims, church leaders, and every heart searching for peace: Come and behold the love of God. Come and encounter the crucified and risen Lord. Come and receive healing where Christ continues to draw souls to Himself,” said Mwebembezi, adding that private pilgrimages are open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

During the most recent First Friday gathering, Rev. Fr. Vincent Kaboyi led hundreds of worshippers in powerful sessions of prayer and preaching, focusing on the theme of “spiritual battles that begin in childhood.” He cautioned believers about the challenges that arise within families and bloodlines, urging them to remain steadfast in faith.

“The strongest attack is when the child is still young. Many of those who bewitch us—99%—are relatives. But no one can destroy a person chosen and anointed by God. We are children of the Kingdom,” Kaboyi said.

Quoting Deuteronomy 28:11, he reminded the congregation that God’s blessings extend to generations, families, and even the land itself. He also announced that before the year ends, he will hold special prayers for families, farmers, and community well-being.

In his address, Lt. (Rtd) Moses Mushabe, the National Chairperson of the Veterans League and a member of the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), pledged continued support for the prayer centre and promised to advocate for a visit from President Yoweri Museveni to witness the ongoing evangelisation efforts.

He donated two Friesian cows to the ministry and encouraged the faithful to continue supporting the government’s vision, particularly through initiatives aimed at improving modern farming in the Ankole region — one of Uganda’s key food production zones.

“We believe Calvary Hill is not only a place of prayer but also a beacon of hope and transformation for the Ankole sub-region and Uganda at large,” Mushabe said.

Among the day’s many testimonies was that of Catherine Atheire, who shared her story of miraculous healing.

“God healed me from a disease that had troubled me since childhood. I will always come back to thank Him. With faith, there is nothing God cannot do,” she said.

The continued flow of testimonies and spiritual experiences has transformed Calvary Hill into a major religious attraction in Western Uganda. For many, it has reduced the need to travel long distances to renowned prayer centres like Mt. Zion Bukalango or Kiwamirembe in the Central Region.

With its growing reputation and the unwavering leadership of the clergy, Calvary Hill stands as a testament to faith, unity, and the enduring power of prayer.

Each month, more pilgrims ascend the hill, seeking to encounter God, renew their spirits, and witness the miracles that have come to define this sacred site.
