What started as a typical Sunday evening at Seeta High School’s Mbalala Campus turned tragic and left many questions after a Senior Six student drowned under mysterious conditions in the school’s swimming pool.
Kevin Nsamba, 21, was spotted last at approximately 5:30 PM, shortly after playing soccer with other students. What occurred afterward has bewildered both his colleagues and the investigators. Early reports indicate that Nsamba and a number of students headed to the pool, where he reportedly leaped into the deep end and did not come back up.
At that moment, trainees were in the pool being supervised by a lifeguard. “Nsamba allegedly leapt into the deep end and disappeared,” stated Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Police Spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Area.
What’s surprising is the duration it took for anyone to notice that something was amiss. Nsamba’s absence only became noticeable later that evening after the movie had ended. Worried students alerted the dormitory captain, who subsequently contacted the chief warden and ultimately the school principal. The police were not informed about the incident until Monday afternoon.
A suspected drowning incident was reported at Mbalala Police Station and promptly sent to Mukono Central Police Station for further investigation. Authorities sent a group of crime scene specialists, rescue teams, and forensic analysts. The body was ultimately retrieved and transported to Mulago City Mortuary for an autopsy.
“The trainer at the swimming pool has been detained to aid with inquiries,” Owoyesigyire confirmed. Initial evidence suggests that a pool attendant was present during the incident, though their specific role is still being evaluated. CCTV recordings are currently being analyzed one frame at a time for evidence.
While detectives await autopsy results and analyze the sequence of events, one fact is evident: there are still more questions than answers regarding Kevin Nsamba’s last moments.
