Tragedy Strikes: Mohan and Maria Kiwanuka’s Son Found Dead in U.S. Apartment

The Ugandan business and political elite are reeling after the sudden death of Nsereko Kyamukungubya Kiwanuka, the 34-year-old son of tycoon Mohan Kiwanuka and former Finance Minister Maria Kiwanuka.

Nsereko was discovered unresponsive on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, in his Washington, D.C. apartment. Authorities and family members believe he suffered a sudden heart attack.

A promising life cut short

Just months ago, Nsereko had completed his MBA at the University of Denver and landed a promising role as a financial advisor with a U.S.-based real estate firm. He had recently received confirmation that he had passed his probation period — two months earlier than expected — a testament to his sharp intellect and professional excellence.

“He was excited, really excited,” a relative shared. “He had finally found his rhythm abroad.”

With Monday marked as a U.S. public holiday, Nsereko stayed indoors. But when he didn’t report to work on Tuesday, alarm bells rang. A family friend alerted police, who forced entry into his apartment.

Inside, Nsereko was found lifeless, the television still flickering with his favorite sports channel — a chilling snapshot of his final moments.

Before moving abroad, Nsereko worked with dfcu Bank in Uganda, where he quietly built his career with a reputation for diligence and integrity. Friends recall him as reserved yet ambitious, kind yet intensely driven.

In the United States, he had begun carving out a new chapter, balancing the challenges of cultural adjustment with remarkable academic and professional success.

“He was living alone, yes — but he was not isolated,” the family said. “He kept in touch. He was happy.”

News of his death has sent shockwaves across the Ugandan diaspora and Kampala’s elite circles. Former colleagues and friends describe him as a man of immense promise whose journey was cut painfully short.

The loss of Nsereko has left a deep void — a reminder of how fleeting life can be, even for the brightest among us.
