In a recent post shared on his official X handle, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the prominent opposition leader, has accused the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) of violating electoral and government guidelines by transporting individuals allegedly paid to attend National Resistance Movement (NRM) events. The incident, which occurred yesterday in Kampala, has reignited discussions surrounding the use of state resources in partisan politics, with Kyagulanyi condemning the government for its flagrant disregard of the law.
Alleged Use of Government Resources for NRM Events
In a post that quickly gained traction, Kyagulanyi, who is also the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), highlighted a truck, reportedly belonging to the UPDF, that was seen ferrying individuals. According to the opposition leader, these individuals are typically paid to attend NRM events, an act he claims is a clear violation of the law. The law, Kyagulanyi asserts, categorically prohibits the use of government resources for partisan political purposesAs the 2026 presidential elections approach, tensions continue to rise in Uganda’s political landscape. With opposition leaders like Kyagulanyi accusing the government of using unlawful tactics to suppress dissent, the political climate remains tense.
