KAMPALA; Ugandan business titan Sudhir Ruparelia marked his 70th birthday on January 17th,2026, a milestone that underscores a remarkable journey from humble beginnings to becoming one of Africa’s most influential self-made entrepreneurs.
Born in Kabatoro, Kasese District, in 1956, Sudhir’s early life was shaped by Uganda’s turbulent socio-political landscape.
In 1972, at age 16, his family fled to the United Kingdom amid Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians. There, he honed his entrepreneurial skills through various jobs in supermarkets, factories, and butcheries, eventually saving US$25,000.
Returning to Uganda in 1985 amid improving stability, Sudhir started modestly by importing beer and spirits from Kenya. When beer imports were banned in 1989, he pivoted to foreign exchange, launching Crane Forex Bureau the country’s first. Building on its success, he founded Crane Bank in 1995, laying the groundwork for the Ruparelia Group, now a sprawling conglomerate.
Today, the Ruparelia Group spans real estate, hospitality, education, insurance, broadcasting, floriculture, and more. Iconic assets include Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, Victoria University, Kampala Parents School, and extensive commercial properties that define Kampala’s skyline. The group employs thousands, drives economic growth, and remains a cornerstone of Uganda’s private sector.
Sudhir’s acumen lies in diversification, strategic vision, and resilience. Despite challenges including the 2016 closure and later restitution of Crane Bank he has sustained expansion.
Recent accolades include the 2025 Golden Jubilee Medal for wildlife conservation and tourism contributions, and the Lifetime Achievers Award at the National Property Awards.
Beyond business, his philanthropy through the Ruparelia Foundation supports education, health, youth programs, and environmental initiatives, reflecting a commitment to national development.
The 70th birthday celebrations drew tributes hailing him as a “true visionary” and “national treasure,” an inspiration for believing in Uganda’s potential. Amid personal trials, including the tragic 2025 loss of his son Rajiv, Ruparelia continues leading with integrity and innovation.
As he enters his eighth decade, Ruparelia’s legacy endures: a testament to perseverance, bold vision, and transformative impact on Uganda’s economy.
Happy 70th, Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia may the next chapter bring even greater heights.
