KAMPALA; Government has ordered all illegal car dealers operating along road reserves and pedestrian walkways in Kampala to vacate immediately, in a move aimed at restoring order, improving traffic flow, and enhancing pedestrian safety.
The directive was issued on Monday by the Minister of State for Works and Transport, Musa Ecweru, during an operation to address growing congestion along major city routes.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Allan Ssempebwa, noted that several meetings had previously been held with car bond operators, but many ignored guidance to relocate or formalize their businesses.
In 2024, then Uganda National Roads Authority and KCCA cleared out car bonds at Coin in Kyambogo and Banda after they had created a nuisance in the area, filling up the road shoulders and obstructing traffic flow.
While the menace is not as bad, authorities feel more can be done to keep the areas clear.
Meanwhile, KCCA continues to enforce regulations against traders selling goods along city roads as part of broader efforts to clean up Kampala and improve urban standards to match modern cities.
